Silent Crude

Silent Crude, a purposely silent film, is a textured, visual rumination on oil, sustainability, death, resources, and ecological destruction. The mesmeric images of abandoned gas stations and heavy oil fire smoke lean into questions regarding the sanctity of fuel energy substances and maintaining the status quo. They suggest inquiry into what is yet to come (or what might be looming just over the horizon) for our human, mammalian species, for the world in which we live, and for all the other creatures upon it.

Ghosts of Dinners Past

“Ghosts of dinners past” is a homage to the seasonal drama and trauma that comes from the extended family, multigenerational traditional holiday meal. This installation is meant to highlight and poke fun at the shared weirdness of the traditional holiday meal, while quietly highlighting some serious, horrible memories such meals may trigger in my friends and family.dsd

THURSDAY

Family Night

THURSDAY @ 6:15

My Dad’s Calling

Leo, Evah, and Jupiter come together to pack a punch far beyond three people should, as they mix together and even rotate on uke, guitar, bass, drums, violin, and vocals. They’re an indie rock vibe, mastering covers and originals that highlight vocal and sound influences from bands like The Cranberries, Radiohead, Counting Crows, and emotional depth and lyrical influences from bands like Cloud Cult, Fleet Foxes, and David Bowie. They find a ton of inspiration from their MRC instructors’ bands: shout out to Shanna Willie and Traxx Kavajecz!

Family Night

THURSDAY @ 6:45

Kid’s Kitchen

A rockin band from Denfeld.

Joy Thumb

THURSDAY @ 7:15

Joy & Melancholy

Joy and Melancholy is an alternative band, known for their strange takes on the human experience. Consisting of Anna Joy on guitar/vocals, Eli Stanley on drums, and Kaitlyn Woodhull on keys/vocals. Influenced by varied artists from 2000’s pop punk, to 90s grunge, to modern pop- they are a healthy mix of anger, sadness, and comedy you do not want to miss. Plus, with lyrics like theirs, you’ll probably learn something too!

THURSDAY @ 7:45

Brainwashed

BRAINWASHED is a Metal-Fusion band, featuring Art on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Avery on lead guitar, Ronin on bass and backup vocals, and Jack on drums. They’re influenced by artists such as Rage Against the Machine, Primus, Deftones, and Pantera.

You’ll be impressed by their incredible musicianship and creative approach to everything from lyrics to guitar parts and bass lines.

Rocking Rodents thumb

THURSDAY @ 8:15

Rocking Rodents

The Rodents include Calliope + Alex on vocals, Xander on bass, Alec on Drums, and Cory on guitar and backup vocals. While their instrument composition is traditional, their style is not. This rodent music is witty, fun, contemplative, poignant, and accessible to all ages. It’s easy listening with an edge that will make you dance along

FRIDAY

Mara Thumb

FRIDAY @ 6:30

Mara Lovejoy

From DNT feature: “Glam is a good label for what I’m doing, conceptually,” said Lovejoy. On her album “Liminal,” though, “there’s songs where I was thinking about Metallica or Queens of the Stone Age, or death metal. There’s other ones where I was thinking of Nina Simone or Jeff Buckley or Patti Smith, or the Misfits or Portishead.”

FRIDAY @ 7:30

Shading The Sun

An amalgamation of shoegaze, new wave, trip-hop, post-punk goth and pop, it is the artistic output of Minneapolis-based electronic producer, Aaron Jacobson. Lyrically, Shadingthesun darkly pursues romance, paranoia, lust, shame, and hope.

Whispered Thumb

FRIDAY @ 8:30

Whispered The Rabbit

An instrumental soundtrack forming from the backlot of Minneapolis, Whispered the Rabbit blends progressive folk, rock, and punk to take you on a lore-inspired journey through secret gardens, cosmic storms, and historic dance battles.

Quilz Thumb

FRIDAY @ 9:30

The Quilz

AoR Thumb

SAT 7:30

Anatomy of Ruminants

A sound journey to the center of the earth, death-inspired
ambient, dream-pop played out in technicolor bliss.

SAT 8:30

Paul Cerar

Paul Cerar’s music combines the catchy hooks and chord progressions of 2000s pop-punk with the cacophony of modern post-punk and noise. Joined onstage by a backing band composed of his friends and fellow Minneapolis musicians, Paul’s live shows bring an energy that needs to be seen to be believed.

Magenta Vice

SAT 9:30

Magenta Vice

Magenta Vice are an electronic duo formed in 2019 whose members have deep roots in Twin Cities music going back nearly 30 years and spanning several styles. John W and Erik W approach synthwave as a band rather than as producers, focusing on live hardware instrumental performance and the freedom and spontaneity that come from working outside the world of DAW-based production.

F.A.Q.

What is Boubville?

Well, it’s not Bentleyville, that’s for sure. It is a festival of (b)light and music located in Duluth’s central hillside. An eclectic squad of twin ports artists come together to create an immersive backyard community spectacle. The garage becomes a venue. A meandering trail features outdoor art installations shining in the night. Smoked turkey, kids crafts (Thursday), a curated gift shop, and more await your curiosity.

What’s light art?

Each one of this year’s 10+ installations incorporates light in some fashion. Beginning at sunset, the Boubville tour winds around the property with a wide variety of light based, or light infused, works to experience. Projection mapping, light tunnels, staged scenes, a black light forest, and a mystical beach are a few examples.

What about accessibility?

We apologize that Boubville currently requires full mobility to attend. The entrance to our site is a steep and rugged driveway. Our installation trails are primitive and uneven. Improving access to the property is a high priority for coming years, but is currently beyond our reach. We will have a free livestream available on YouTube for anyone wishing to tune in from home.

What sort of music can I expect?

Our lineup is a mash of styles and genres. From punk to indie to electro to drag, each night is its own roller-coaster of sound. For 2024 we’re featuring bands from Duluth, Minneapolis, and as far away as Milwaukee.

Safety?

Boubville takes place on private property, enter at your own risk. Keep in mind we are a DIY festival filled with experimental works, near the heart of downtown Duluth, in a backyard with a steep entry and uneven terrain.

We do not serve alcohol or encourage the use of any substances. Anyone exhibiting signs of unsafe or inappropriate behavior will be ejected from the property immediately. This includes performers and staff. Boubville retains the right to eject anyone for any reason.

If you observe anyone or anything that poses a risk to yourself, others, or the property, we ask that you let our staff know immediately. We’ll be easy to spot, wearing LED flower crowns, and equipped with walkie talkies and headlamps.
